Weeks ahead of its official Paris Motor Show debut, General Motors has announced a $500 million investment to build the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze at its Lordstown, Ohio plant.
“The Chevrolet Cruze was designed and engineered by our global teams in Europe and Asia Pacific and will be manufactured in those regions in addition to the assembly plant here in Lordstown, Ohio,” said GM Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Rick Wagoner. “Our goal for the Chevrolet Cruze is to lead in fuel economy in this very competitive car segment.”
At launch in Europe, the Cruze will chase that goal with three available four-cylinder engines:
- 1.6-liter, 112-horsepower
- 1.8-liter, 140-horsepower
- 2.0-liter, 150-horsepower turbo diesel
And a choice of five-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmissions.
Powertrains and other details for the United States have not been announced, though these Euro-market combinations sound appealing.
