2009 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen
Sport, utility (really)

Cargo capacity ranges from 32.8-66.9 cubic feet. A pullout screen shields contents from inquiring eyes and there’s a long, narrow carpeted storage bin beneath the floor in back. The roomy theme extends from parcels to passengers. The front seats have enough travel to accommodate basketball players. Legroom in row two will hold six footers, with like-size people in front. The available, sliding sunroof offers an oversized shot of fresh air with minimal wind buffeting.
Also on the option sheet is a navigation system with rearview camera and sound system upgrades. Pick a six-disc CD player, though, and you forego your center console storage, as that’s where they put the changer. The dash and door panels mix colors and textures together well, and fit and finish are very good.
In a car market that’s generally slumping, VW’s stock seems to be rising. Statistics from well-known market surveyors show that the company’s initial quality numbers continue to improve. March sales were up double digits compared to one year previously, and the pipeline for the rest of 2008 is stoked with new product, starting with SportWagen. The new Jetta wagon—particularly once the TDI joins the lineup—should have some legs for VW. The company estimates sales of about 14,000 units per year, once the full lineup is in place. (www.vw.com)
