To highlight the new engine features, the ML320 BlueTEC gets a significant redesign inside and out. Highlights include new front bumpers, revised headlights and a lower grill that holds three large silver ribs. In addition, the re-contoured rear bumper gets a stainless-steel skid plate. The new interior items a four-spoke steering wheel, redesigned seats and a sound system that boasts a six-disc in-dash CD changer.
Options and Pricing
An attractive option is the semi-active air suspension. This uses inflatable rubber air springs to individually adjust each suspension spring rate and shock absorber function. This feature can raise vehicle ride height by about three inches for off-pavement driving. Four-wheel-disc brakes with brake assist are standard. For those who take long road trips or have passengers with short attention spans, DVD players in the back of both front headrests are available.
The starting price for the ML320 is about $46,000 with full-optioned versions exceeding $60,000. The 2008 ML320 earned a Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and scored top ratings in the government’s front crash tests.
Americans have a bad attitude toward diesels and, please forgive me but I am personally partially responsible for that. One January morning with the temperature less than 10 degrees, I started an 18-wheeler in a Kenosha, Wisconsin motel parking lot. The Freightliner’s big diesel barely fired off. With only two or three cylinders firing it made a smokescreen worthy of a World War II warship. Unfortunately, the wind was blowing directly toward the motel entrance. Expecting someone to call the fire department, I hurried through a diesel-flavored complimentary breakfast and left. As I navigated slowly through the diesel fog, the Kenosha police arrived. I kept rolling. My apologies. Things are different with the 2009 ML320 BlueTEC. (www.mbusa.com)
